THERM - thermal bridge energy transfer modeling training

Date Occurred: 14 1105   Trained and practiced developing THERM computer models of thermal transfer across building details likely to create thermal bridging. Thermal bridges are locations where thermally conductive building materials, such as steel framing, concrete foundations and slabs, or solid wood blocking could transfer heat through a building enclosure, creating potential locations where temperatures could reach dewpoint. Condensation can occur when moisture comes in contact with materials at or below dewpoint temperature. Condensation in or on building materails and assemblies will result in building health and durability problems like mold and material decay. Thermal bridging most often occurs at building component intersections like wall/floor edges, wall and roof framing corners and installed window and door frames. Passive House design and detailing avoids thermal bridging as much as possible, but sometimes it may be unavoidable. THERM modeling can help show you where and how to modify a design to minimize thermal bridging to a safe limit.

For my day job, I'm an architect focused on green design. Not a bad gig! Caring for the planet is a theme throughout my life. This page is where I like to talk about how that love for the earth plays out – in architecture and in my life.
