Our Process
Before we start your project, we consult with you to fully understand your needs and goals. To get the right answers, you need to start with the right questions. We assess your site to determine the unique building placement opportunities and challenges presented. We develop a written description of goals, which we refer to regularly throughout the process to confirm that we are accomplishing what we have set out to do. With your objectives clearly established and understood, we then begin developing the design for your new building. When planning for the inclusion of green renewable energy, we focus in depth on energy efficiency first.

Using Passive House (Passiv Haus in Europe) principles and techniques – including computer modeling – we simulate and analyze the energy efficiency of each component, wall, floor, window and door of the design before the structure is ever built, and make adjustments to improve it. The Passive House building energy standard promoted by PHIUS is the most rigorous building energy standard in the world. Passive House computer modeling metrics are field-tested on an ongoing basis, confirming that computer modeling results are accurate forecasts of actual construction performance. Buildings typically outperform their computer modeling due to built-in conservative calculations. New and most existing buildings can be designed or modified to meet Passive House standards.

Carefully selecting building materials to match your design, budget, and energy goals, we choose cost-effective, sustainable, locally sourced products and support local economies wherever possible, in keeping with the principles of environmentally friendly design. Once we have reached the energy efficiency goal for the building design, we begin incorporating any desired green renewable energy features such as solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, and wind. By cost optimizing building construction efficiency first, renewable energy cost is minimized and effectiveness is maximized.

Our involvement does not end with the design of your building or home. When you work with Anderson Sustainable Architecture, you can expect us to help you select contractors or subcontractors and to make site visits during construction to observe that the implementation of the design is taking place correctly. We look forward to meeting in your competed building and celebrating our shared accomplishments. Let’s get started today on planning your affordable green project.
