About Us: Mark Carsten Anderson, AIA, CPHC |
|
Mark Carsten Anderson is the founder, President and chief visionary behind Anderson Sustainable Architecture. A member of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Passive House Alliance - US (PHAUS), Mark is a Certified Passive House Consultant (CPHC).
Even as a kid, Mark was a little different from his friends. Every time they all finished building a fort together, his friends would be excited to play in it: Mark would be excited to go build another fort.
Mark’s interest in architecture grew as a teen when he, his father, and brother planned and built the buildings on their family farm, designing all of the structures, felling the trees, skidding the logs out, and running their own sawmill to cut the lumber to construct the farm buildings.
Working for a homebuilder during his college years, Mark attended the School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis in the early 1980s. He graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Bachelor of Environmental Design – the 1980s degree for the green architect. After an extensive career working for architectural firms focusing on technically savvy architecture, Mark returned to his early passion by starting his own firm dedicated to client-focused sustainable architectural design.
Mark Anderson’s experience and expertise in religious facilities also began in architecture school during a foreign study trip, which focused on the religious, cultural, and environmental influences on art and architecture of churches, cathedrals, temples, and mosques. Mark spent nine months to study church planning. Later Mark studied Liturgical Design Consulting at The Institute for Liturgical Consultants program in The Catholic Theological Union, in Chicago, IL and took classes in worship and sacraments at The St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity at University of St. Thomas, St. Paul, MN.

He has also presented his own educational program on “The Physics of Natural Lighting and Ventilation” to established architects, been a regular presenter at the Minnesota State Fair Eco-Experience booth, and done numerous public speaking events on topics relating to sustainable architectural design.
