"An Introduction to Net-Zero Energy and Passive House - Designing for sustainability, health and comfort" is the title of our presentation to the Twin Cities Cohousing Network Thursday, November 9th. We will be discussing how designing your building for energy sustainability using Passive House principles and processes is the most cost-effective path to Net-Zero Energy. Passive House (PHIUS) has input local construction material and labor costs, solar installation costs and rebates, financing costs; along with climate data into an energy modeling design program. This allows the architect and owner to select the insulation values for walls, windows and doors, roof and foundation confidently, knowing they can cost and performance optimize the building insulation investment. Any further investment is best spent providing renewable energy to cover greatly reduced remaining energy demands. Insulation is still cheaper than solar panels, even with falling solar panel prices. Lowering a buildings heating and cooling energy demand 80-90% by adding insulation is cheaper than buying solar panels to cover that 80-90%. There will be a question and answer period, and we will be available for further discussion afterwards.

The Twin Cities Cohousing Network meeting is Thursday, November 9th, at St. Francis Cabrini Church, 1500 SE Franklin Avenue, Minneapolis, MN 55141. The meeting starts off with a potluck dinner from 6:00-6:45pm. Our presentation will start around 7:15. To learn more about the Twin Cities Cohousing Network and Cohousing, please check them out at:

For my day job, I'm an architect focused on green design. Not a bad gig! Caring for the planet is a theme throughout my life. This page is where I like to talk about how that love for the earth plays out – in architecture and in my life.
